Application Details for International Applicants

Mittweida University of Applied Sciences offers over 50 degree programmes in the areas of natural sciences, computer science, technology, business, social work and media. Please inform yourself about the courses offered before you apply. Please also check the module handbook, which is available for download.

Most of the degree programmes are offered in German. In additionally, there are three degree programmes that are offered completely in English and one bilingual degree programme that is offered mostly in English:

Application process

To apply for a degree programme at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences, you can use the HSMW application portal for all degree programmes directly. Even if you want to apply for the Studienkolleg (FSP course or DSH course), this is done online via this portal.

Only for the Bachelor's degree programmes Social Work and Media Management is an additional registration via the central study place allocation portal hochschulstart.de necessary. All data entered here, such as the applicant ID (BID) and applicant authentication number (BAN) issued by hochschulstart.de during registration, are transferred to the applicant portal of Mittweida University of Applied Sciences. Therefore, it is advisable to first register at www.hochschulstart.de and apply via the HSMW application portal afterwards.

Whichever degree programme you choose, some documents are necessary for the application. These must be scanned or created online and then uploaded exclusively to the HSMW application portal.

The application portal is currently only available in German. Please use a translation programme to complete the application.

Application deadlines

Applications for studies in Mittweida can be submitted in two periods each year:

• 15 April - 15 July for a study start in the following winter semester.

• 15 October - 15 January for a study start in the following summer semester.

For degree programmes with restricted admission (NC degree programmes), these deadlines are required by law and cannot be extended by the university. Missing documents can still be submitted by 21 July or 21 January.

The majority of our degree programmes are offered in the winter semester. Only the Bachelor's programmes in Social Work start in summer semester.

Due to the great number of applicants, we are unfortunately not able to point out mistakes or missing documents to every applicant. Therefore, please check yourself carefully whether you have submitted all necessary documents in good quality and whether all information you have provided corresponds to reality.

Admission requirements

Bachelor's and diploma degree programmes

The certificate examination is done by us according to the evaluation guidelines of the ZAB of the Kultusministerkonferenz (Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany) and the result must lead to one of the three entitlements in order for you to be able to apply to study at our university

• the entitlement for direct university admission

• the authorisation for university admission (subject-oriented)

• Entitlement to admission to higher education via the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP)

Master's degree programmes

If you already have a first higher education degree, you can apply for a Master's degree programme.

In addition to the general admission requirements, there may also be subject-specific admission requirements for Master's degree programmes. You can read about these in the descriptions of the individual degree programmes.

Admission restrictions (numerus clausus)

In some degree programmes, there are often more applications than there are places to study. For these degree programmes, an admission number can be set by statutory order. An admission procedure will then take place in which the available places are allocated among all applicants who meet the admission requirements and have applied within the applicati on deadline.

Language certificates

Accepted German examinations

The following examinations are accepted as verification of the required German language skills:

DSH - Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer und staatenloser Studienbewerber (German Language Test for University Admission for Foreign and Stateless Applicants) - with an overall grade of at least DSH-2.

TestDaF - with a minimum score of 2 x 4 and 2 x 3

FSP - Feststellungsprüfung (assessment test) to determine the suitability of foreign applicants to study at universities in the Federal Republic of Germany

C1 examination of the Goethe-Institut

• Small or Large Language Diploma of the Goethe-Institut

DSD - German Language Diploma of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs KMK at Level II

• Certificate telc German C1 University

PNDS - Examination for proof of German language skills

ÖSD - Examination C1 Upper Level

Those who have obtained the Abitur at a German school or who can prove that they have passed the Feststellungsprüfung FSP are exempt from taking the language test. There are also other European secondary school certificates which are accepted as proof of the required German language skills. Acceptance always requires a decision on a case-by-case basis by means of a certificate check.

Accredited English examinations

For degree programmes offered completely in English, you must provide evidence of English language skills at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The following examinations are recognised as proof:

• German Abitur certificate with an advanced course in English and at least the grade "good" (2.0 or 11 points) on average over the last 4 school semesters

• internationally recognised language test:

o TOEFL- internet based test (iBT or iBT Home Edition) at least 79 points, not older than 2 years

o IELTS - Academic version (International English Language Testing System) at least band 6.0

o FCE- First Certificate in English

Students who have completed their studies in English do not need any additional proof of language proficiency.

Admission to studies

Admission

If you meet all the admission requirements for studying at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences, you will receive an admission letter. With this you can apply for a visa for the purpose of studying in Germany.

Conditional pre-admission

If you do not yet fulfil the admission requirements for studying at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences, you can receive a conditional preliminary admission. With this notification you can also apply for a visa for the purpose of studying in Germany.

The term "conditional pre-admission" means that conditions have to be fulfilled before you can start your studies. These are named in the "conditional pre-admission". These conditions can be, for example

• Passing the German language examination DSH-2 (if language certificate is missing) or

• Taking the Feststellungsprüfung FSP (in the case of a higher education entrance qualification via the FSP).

Taking the German language examination (DSH)

If you are unable to prove the necessary German language skills, we offer you the opportunity to take the preparatory course for the German language examination DSH-2 at our Studienkolleg. The admission requirement for this is the proof of German language skills of at least level A2 and the taking of an entrance test to determine the level of your German language skills.

Taking the assessment test (FSP)

If the result of the assessment test is that you do not have direct or subject-oriented access to higher education, you can take the preparatory course for the FSP at our Studienkolleg. The admission requirement for the Studienkolleg for the FSP course is proof of German language skills at least at level B2 and an entrance test that includes mathematics as well as German.

Registration for the Studienkolleg

Registration for the Studienkolleg is done via the Application Service of Mittweida University of Applied Sciences and is binding. We charge a registration fee of 250 euros. This will be credited against the course fee (1900€ per semester DSH course and 2400€ per semester FSP course) in case of arrival. In case of non-arrival, this fee will not be refunded, but it is possible to participate at the next possible date of an entrance test. You will then also receive a new conditional pre-admission.

We offer refugee applicants the participation in a free INTEGRA course (DSH and FSP).
